DOC // Activity of zoos to be regulated by new law
The activity of zoos will be regulated by a new law, harmonized with European Union legislation. The document was published today in the Official Journal.
The draft of the new law on zoos was developed by the Ministry of Environment and transposes into national legislation the European directive on wild animals in zoos, which establishes the legal framework for the authorization and control of zoos in order to conserve biodiversity and protect wild species.
In this regard, minimum standards will be introduced in the legislation for authorizing the operation of zoos, conducting periodic inspections, as well as ensuring animal welfare and public education. Thus, a clear, efficient, and applicable mechanism for the authorization and supervision of zoos will be created. Following the adoption of the new law, rules will be established regarding the record-keeping and registration of animals held in zoos, and the management of collection lists will be mandatory.
Currently, the activity of zoos is regulated by a law adopted in 2007, which is no longer up to date.
This law will enter into force 12 months after the date of its publication in the Official Journal.
