Moldovan parliament speaker says agreement with IMF important indicator for international partners

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today said that the conclusion of a new Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was an important signal for the reliability of Moldova in relation to international partners.

"It is good to have the Agreement. It does not impose financial commitments on us. But it is good to have such an agreement with the IMF, because it is also an indicator for many bilateral or multilateral partners, including for the European Union. Everyone looks and asks whether the concerned country has a framework for cooperation, policies, interaction with the IMF, with the World Bank," the parliament speaker said.

Igor Grosu explained that the Agreement did not involve loans, given that the country has financial resources available under the Growth Plan worth 1.9 billion euros approved by the European Union.

"We are not borrowing. The agreement with the IMF does not imply loans. That was our decision. For the moment, we have resources available from the European Union. Only if we decide and see that there is a need for financial resources, then we will return to this issue," Igor Grosu said.

Moldova and the IMF have reached a staff-level agreement on a new programme without financing for the next three years, supported through the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI). The decision was announced by the authorities after an IMF expert team led by Alina Iancu had visited Chisinau on May 7-20.

According to the IMF, the new Programme will help anchor macroeconomic stability in the context of persistent global uncertainties, strengthen the policy framework and promote structural reforms aimed at supporting more sustainable and inclusive economic growth, as well as supporting Moldova’s strategic goal to advance its EU accession agenda.
