Bank Fraud case: former leader of Moldovan Democratic Party to learn his sentence today
The former leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Vladimir Plahotniuc, is to learn his sentence in the Bank Fraud case today. Prosecutors have requested a 25-year prison sentence in a closed-type penitentiary.
The hearing will take place at the Chisinau Court, Buiucani office, starting from 14:00.
According to prosecutors, the evidence presented would prove Vlad Plahotniuc’s guilt, allegations rejected by the former Democrat leader’s lawyers.
The 25-year prison sentence is requested cumulatively, for more charges. Thus, Vladimir Plahotniuc is accused of fraud, money laundering and creating and leading a criminal organization.
In addition, besides the Bank Fraud case, Vladimir Plahotniuc is under investigation for document forgery. The criminal proceedings in this case have been initiated recently based on documents seized by Greek investigators from the house which the former Democrat leader was renting in Athens, Greece. The documents show that he allegedly used multiple identities, with a total of 18 fake documents found.
Vladimir Plahotniuc has been in pre-trial detention since 25 September 2025, after being extradited from Greece, at which point the four arrest warrants issued in his name were enforced. He is currently detained in Penitentiary No. 13 from Chisinau.
