Italian media provides details on death of Moldovan killed by fireworks

Ion Botnari, aged 63, has been handling the firework when it suddenly exploded, causing severe injuries to his face and chest, Italian media reports. According to Roma Today, emergency crews were unable to save the victim's life, and he was found lying on the ground with fatal hemorrhaging.

Emergency service 118 sources told RomaToday that his hand was also amputated. Ion Botnari died on December 31 afternoon, just a short distance from his home, on Cortemmagiore Street.

Carabinieri were on the scene to take measurements and gather statements to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy. Another firework, similar to the one that exploded and fatally injured him, was discovered in the victim's car.

Italian authorities are investigating how Ion Botnari acquired the artisanal firework and the channels through which it came into his possession.

The tragedy shook the local community, marking a mournful start to the year 2026 for the victim's family and friends.


The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) on January 1 informed about the death of Ion Botnari, a citizen Moldova, and expressed condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim. At the same time, the Embassy of Moldova in Rome is in constant contact with Italian authorities and is prepared to provide the necessary consular assistance, based on requests submitted.
