New chance at life in Moldova: two liver transplant patients discharged in good condition in December

Good news for patients who underwent liver transplants at the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical Hospital in early December. The two patients who underwent the procedures have been discharged and are currently at home in satisfactory condition.

According to the Health Ministry, the transplants were performed in less than 48 hours, and both patients were in the terminal stage of liver cirrhosis, making the procedure their only chance of survival.

One of the patients, a 38-year-old man from the village of Taul, Donduseni district, diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2013, had been on the transplant waiting list since 2014. The second recipient is a 47-year-old man from Giurgiulesti, Cahul district, diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and added to the waiting list in July 2025.

Professor Adrian Hotineanu, head of Surgery Department No. 2 at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, who coordinated the transplant team, said that both patients were feeling well.

‘’Each successful transplant is not only a highly complex medical act, but also a deeply human one. The good results for these patients confirm the professionalism of the teams involved and the importance of organ donation, which gives a new chance at life.’’

Eight other patients have earlier received a new chance at life following liver transplants performed by doctors of Moldova.
