Moldovan General Police Inspectorate endowed with last generation cyber forensic laboratory

The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) has been endowed with a cyber forensic laboratory. The equipment will consolidate the capacity to prevent, investigate and combat the information criminality, through an advanced expertise in the field of digital investigations.

According to the Interior Ministry (MAI), due to the last generation instruments, the IGP employees will be able to analyze and manage the cyber threats in real time, which will protect the country’s digital space even more. Thus, policemen will be able to collect, analyze and use digital evidence during inquiries, in order to quicker identify cyber offenders.

Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin has said that the cyber security became stronger, through the launch of the research, training and testing laboratory.

„With advanced technology and last generation software instruments, this project, carried out with EU’s support, will consolidate the IT capacities of the National Police and will ensure a controlled environment for the investigation of cyber incidents. The laboratory is a key element in the fight against the information criminality, providing realistic scenarios for testing, technological innovation and continuous training. The Technical, Forensic and Legal Expertise Centre thus improves the performance and the reaction capacity. I wish success to the fellows due to work with the top technology. We thank the partners for the constant support in the development of a stronger and more efficient security system,’’ Daniella Misail-Nichitin said.

Also, forensic experts will have access to continuous training programmes. Through realistic simulations, they will learn to detect and counteract the information attacks, preparing for complex scenarios which can affect the country’s digital security. The specialists will be able to test security measures in a controlled environment, given that the cyber threats are ever more persistent.

At the same time, the improvement of the technical capacities of the law-enforcement bodies will facilitate the exchange of information and experience with the law-enforcement institutions from the European Union and other partner states, as well as the combating of the cross-border offences.

The laboratory was opened and endowed with the financial support of the European Union within the EU4Security Moldova project, implemented by CEPOL. The Technical, Forensic and Legal Expertise Centre extends its capacities of investigation of cyber incidents and of identifying critical vulnerabilities. Thus, Moldova makes an important step in aligning with European standards.
