Retailers of Moldova to be required to display country of origin for food products

Retailers of Moldova will be required to visibly display the country of origin of food products, after the parliament today adopted, in the second reading, a draft law amending the law on domestic trade, voted by 59 MPs.

The initiative belongs to a group of MPs from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) faction and aims to enhance transparency for consumers, ensure food security and support local producers.

According to the new provisions, the obligation applies to commercial units with an area of more than 30 square meters. Retailers will have to indicate the name of the country of origin of the products, and the use of the flag is optional, but the flag cannot be displayed without explicitly mentioning the country.

The rule will apply to all food products sold at retail, whether prepackaged or sold in bulk. For packaged products, the information will be included on the price label and must be legible, with letters at least 0.3 centimeters high.

The document also provides for sanctions for non-compliance with the new requirements. Thus, responsible people risk fines of up to 6,000 lei, and legal entities – up to 12,000 lei.

According to the explanatory note, the measure might help increase sales of domestic products by 5–15 per cent in certain categories, as well as develop short supply chains and reduce environmental impact.

The legislative amendments will enter into force three months after publication in the Official Journal.
