National Fathers’ Day marked Moldova

The Republic of Moldova is celebrating National Fathers’ Day today, a holiday established by Parliament in 2025 and marked this year for the second time. This day is dedicated to recognizing the role that fathers play in raising, educating, and ensuring the harmonious development of children.

Minister of Labour and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru emphasized that the institution promotes several measures that encourage the equal participation of both parents in the care and education of children. Thus, in recent years, a number of provisions have been implemented to give fathers the opportunity to spend more time with their families and to more easily combine professional life with family responsibilities.

“When both parents share caregiving and educational responsibilities, children grow up in a safer, more balanced, and more loving environment. Through the policies we promote, we want every father to have the opportunity to be present in their child’s life from the very first days and throughout childhood. A strong society begins with families in which care, respect, and responsibility are shared,” stated Natalia Plugaru.

Among the most important measures is the flexibilization of childcare leave, which allows parents to decide how to share this responsibility and to choose one of three options for granting the allowance: 90% of the salary for a leave of one year; 60% of the salary in the first year and 30% in the second year for a two-year leave; or 30% of the salary over a period of three years.

Additionally, the period during which paternity leave can be requested has been extended from 56 days to one year after the child’s birth, and its duration has been increased from 14 to 15 calendar days. Likewise, amendments to the regulatory framework on flexible work arrangements give parents, including fathers, the possibility to combine professional activities with family life more effectively.

On the occasion of Fathers’ Day, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, together with its partners, is organizing an event dedicated to promoting active fatherhood and equality in the family, which will take place between 10:00 and 13:00 in Teatrul de Vară Park in Ialoveni. The program will include interactive activities for the whole family, challenges for fathers, inspirational stories, and discussions on the importance of the involvement of both parents in the upbringing and education of children.

National Fathers’ Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of June. The celebration of this day aims to promote active fatherhood, a priority area included in the National Program for Ensuring Equality between Women and Men for 2023–2027. Thus, the authorities seek to encourage fathers and grandfathers to be actively involved in the care and education of children, including through the development of the Fathers’ Club network, communication campaigns, and partnerships with employers.
