Farmers from the central Hancesti district will be able to plan activities more efficiently and receive early warnings about drought, frost or flooding. A new automatic weather station, which will provide real-time data, was inaugurated in the settlement today.

The station is equipped with high-precision sensors capable of monitoring essential meteorological parameters, such as air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction, the amount and intensity of precipitation, as well as solar radiation.

The inauguration event was attended by State Secretary of the Environment Ministry Aliona Rusnac, who emphasized the importance of modernizing monitoring systems, in the context of climate change and extreme weather events which had affected Moldova in recent years.

“The climatic conditions of this region, compared to other parts of the country, are harsher and manifest through a significantly lower amount of precipitation, followed by excessive aridity of large land masses and prolonged drought periods,” said Aliona Rusnac.

The station was set with the support of the project, Improving Human Security in Moldova through Enhanced Agri-Food Resilience to External and Climatic Shocks, funded by the government of Japan and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project provides for the installation and development of eight monitoring stations with an agrometeorological programme in the Southern Region of Moldova.
