Ombudsmen urge new parliament to reevaluate and reset democratic mechanisms, especially in relations between legislative, executive, judicial powers

Ombudsmen have issued an appeal urging the new Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to act responsibly and with balance in the governance process, requesting a thorough reevaluation of democratic mechanisms and a reset of the relationships between the three state powers – legislative, executive and judiciary.

In a public appeal, the institution highlights the importance of strengthening the rule of law, good governance, and respecting human rights, especially in the context of the country's European path.

According to the Ombudsmen, following the elections on September 28, the Republic of Moldova is entering a crucial phase of institutional development, and the mandate entrusted to the new deputies by the citizens must be honored through transparent, participative, and balanced governance.

The society expects political maturity, balance, and respect for human rights from the new Legislature. At the same time, there is a need for proportional application of security measures so that they do not affect civil liberties.

The Ombudsmen have identified nine strategic directions that can contribute to the strengthening of democracy, including: decision-making transparency, effective parliamentary control, integration of human rights into the governance process, digitalization of administration, periodic evaluation of public policies, and strengthening of autonomous institutions.

Additionally, the institution draws attention to the necessity of a constant dialogue between the Parliament, Government, civil society, and independent institutions to ensure quality and responsible governance.

The Ombudsman's Office announces that it will remain an independent institution, sometimes inconvenient, but necessary.

In the upcoming period, the Ombudsmen announce they will propose organizing a meeting with the Parliament's leadership and civil society representatives to establish principles of collaboration and mutual accountability.
