PHOTO// Nortek, engine of innovation, digitalization in north Moldova; investments' impact exceeds expectations

The Nortek Innovation and Technology Transfer Center from the Balti city, set up  under the auspices of Alecu Russo State University, has emerged in less than three years as a pillar of knowledge and technology-based economy in the North Development Region. The project was carried out with the support of the Moldova’s government, through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development (FNDRL), and with the support of development partners United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Sweden and UK aid.

Through modern infrastructure and programmes supporting start-ups, Nortek presently works as a platform of cooperation between the academic environment, the private sector and local public authorities, boosting initiatives in digitalization, applied innovation and technological entrepreneurship.

The results are visible: dozens of young researchers and local entrepreneurs have benefited from technological and logistical support and projects developed at the Center contribute to enhancing the economic competitiveness of the region and integrating new technologies into local industries.

To assess the impact of these investments, a team from the North Regional Development Agency (ADR Nord) conducted a monitoring visit to the Nortek Center.  ADR Nord specialists analyzed how public resources are used and found that the equipment and infrastructure are in excellent condition and innovation activities are expanding.

‘’Nortek shows how a strategic investment, supported by development partners and efficiently managed, can change the dynamics of a region. It is an example of best practice in regional development and technology transfer,’’ ADR Nord said.

The agency is set to finalize the post-implementation evaluation report, which will include conclusions and recommendations regarding the sustainability, relevance, and efficiency of public investments.

The project on the Centre’s to creation was implemented in two stages and included the complete modernization of blocks 4 and 5 of Alecu Russo State University in Balti, with a total area of 6,054 square meters. They were connected to utility networks and equipped with advanced communication, security and automation systems.

To implement the project, the government of Moldova allocated 24.9 million lei from the FNDRL, while international partners USAID, Sweden and UK aid continue to contribute through investments in digitalization, education and technological entrepreneurship.

Inaugurated on December 2, 2022, the Nortek Center has quickly become a symbol of modernization and intersectoral collaboration in the north of the country, confirming Moldova’s potential to develop sustainable regional hubs for innovation and technology transfer.
