Dniester river water level drops

The Dniester Commission has decided to reduce the water discharge rate into the Dniester River from 85 to 75 cubic meters per second, starting now and continuing until the end of August. The measure aims to conserve water reserves amid the continuous decline in the volume of the Novodnestrovsk reservoir.

Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder said that monitoring in recent weeks shows a steady decrease in the reservoir’s water volume.

“Monitoring in recent weeks indicates a continuous decrease in the water volume of the Novodnestrovsk reservoir. In addition, forecasts for the next two months do not predict sufficient precipitation in the upper Dniester basin (the Carpathian area) to improve the situation. Ensuring the population’s access to drinking water remains a strategic priority. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and will take all necessary measures to ensure continued water supply,” said Gheorghe Hajder.

The Republic of Moldova is facing a difficult hydrological situation, against the backdrop of a significant drop in water resources in the Dniester basin. On July 27, the water level in the Novodnestrovsk reservoir was 113.24 meters, compared to the normal level of 121 meters. During the same period, authorities warned about the risk that the discharge from the reservoir could fall below the threshold of 100 cubic meters per second, which could affect the operation of intake stations and water supply.

On July 28, the Government declared a hydrological alert for 30 days, following the decrease of water resources in the Dniester basin.
