PM on Independence Day says Moldovans should cherish path taken, continue building country

On the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, together with President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, have laid flowers at the Grieving Mother monument at the Eternity Memorial Complex and at the monument to Ruler Stephen the Great and Holy.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan thanked all Moldovans who, over the years, had contributed to strengthening the country’s independence and those who had fought for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

“Today we can think freely and travel freely. The path we have followed to become masters of our own destiny has been a difficult one. We must realize how important that step was and how far our country has advanced in these 35 years. I also want to thank those who fought for the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova in 1992. There were many such Moldovans, and some of them sacrificed their lives. Today, it is very important to remember them and to pay tribute to all those who fought for this country,” the PM said.

The prime minister also underlined that the authorities must meet citizens’ expectations and continue the country’s development: “I understand that many people may have had higher expectations from independence. At the Government, we understand that expectations are high, and our duty is to live up to them.”

Alongside the three leaders, members of the cabinet of ministers, MPs, employees of central public institutions, deputies of the first parliament and citizens took part in the flower-laying ceremony.

Events dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Independence are continuing throughout the day in Chisinau. On this occasion, the President of Romania Nicusor Dan and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected in Moldova.

At 16:30, citizens are invited to the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) for the military parade, in which over 2,000 soldiers and representatives of participating structures will take part, and more than 100 units of military and special equipment from the National Army and the Interior Ministry will be presented. The schedule will continue from 18:00 with a concert dedicated to Independence Day, featuring numerous local artists.

The Republic of Moldova proclaimed its independence on August 27, 1991. This year, the celebration is held under the motto, Independence Unites Us.
