Moldovan PM conveys message on Independence Day

On the 35th anniversary of Independence, the Republic of Moldova has managed to achieve important results, and it remains crucial not to lose hope, to stay united and to believe in the country’s future. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made statements to this effect on Independence Day, celebrated today.

The PM underlined that, despite difficulties, the Republic of Moldova had gained the freedom to decide its own destiny.

“It is important not to lose hope, to believe in a better life and to be proud of what we have managed to achieve in these 35 years of independence. No matter how hard it has been, we have still succeeded in many things. We are a free people, who can choose what to do, can travel, can decide,” said Vasile Tofan in a live intervention for Radio Moldova.

The prime minister called for unity and a joint effort for the country’s development, noting that the government has the responsibility to meet citizens’ expectations.

“Let us not forget that we started out from what was essentially a prison of peoples, the USSR, and no matter how difficult things may be, it is important to see the good side of things and not lose hope, and to all work together. First and foremost, the government must work to live up to the expectations of the citizens. I congratulate all Moldovans on Independence Day, 35 years of independence, that independence which unites all Moldovans,” said the prime minister.

Vasile Tofan said that he had accepted the position of PM with a strong sense of responsibility and that his priority was to improve people’s standard of living.

“I want people to live better and for their day‑to‑day life to reflect the values we hold, because we are a hardworking, kind people and we deserve more,” the official emphasized.

At the same time, the prime minister reiterated the importance of continuing the European path of the Republic of Moldova, stressing that integration into the European Union would create new opportunities for the country’s economic and social development.

The Republic of Moldova is celebrating today 35 years since the proclamation of Independence. On this occasion, the presidents of Romania and Ukraine, Nicusor Dan and Volodymyr Zelensky, are expected in Chisinau, at an invitation of President Maia Sandu, to take part in the events dedicated to this day. Celebrations marking 35 years of independence will take place throughout the day in the capital and across the country.
