VIDEO // Parents can benefit from tax deductions for children's education: Minister of Education explains procedure
Parents who pay for their children's education can benefit from tax deductions for education costs, announced Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun. The measure, introduced last year and maintained in the budget-fiscal policy for 2026 allows deduction from income tax for education expenses, up to 16,100 lei annually, and after the legislative amendments are approved - up to 20,000 lei.
According to the minister, to benefit from the deduction, parents must present three documents: the contract with the educational institution, the invoice, and proof of payment. With these documents, taxpayers can file the income statement at the State Tax Service or submit it online, attaching the supporting documents.
“The state deducts from the payment obligations related to income tax an amount equivalent to up to 16,100 lei, and after the proposed amendments - up to 20,000 lei,” stated Dan Perciun.
He provided an example: if a parent has to pay a tax of 20,000 lei, and the educational expenses are 12,000 lei, the tax amount is reduced exactly by the value of these expenses.
The minister encouraged parents to use the mechanism and to seek information from the State Tax Service regarding the procedure.
“It is a relatively new tool, in its second year of implementation, and we hope more and more parents will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Perciun, highlighting that the state supports families investing in their children's education.
The facility for deducting educational costs was introduced in 2024, and the current ceiling of 16,100 lei could be increased to 20,000 lei after the legislative amendments proposed by deputy Victoria Belous are approved. Authorities promote the measure as a tool to support investments in education and to encourage parental involvement in the educational development of children.
