VIDEO // Moldovan Speaker on joining SEPA

The Republic of Moldova has officially become part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), a significant achievement in the European integration process and a major change for the national banking system. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement today. He highlighted the tangible benefits for citizens, especially for those in the diaspora.

“Dear Moldovans at home and abroad, as of today we can make faster and cheaper euro transfers,” said Igor Grosu.

He noted that previously, a transfer to the European Union could cost between 30 and 50 euros and take up to three days. With SEPA membership, fees drop to 2–5 euros, regardless of the amount, and the money reaches its destination within a day.

The SEPA zone includes all member states of the European Union, as well as other countries such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Andorra, or Vatican City.

“This is a historic moment for our financial system and clear evidence of the European direction that the Republic of Moldova is taking,” Grosu emphasized.

As of October 6, 2025, the Republic of Moldova has become an operational part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). This allows euro transfers between the payment systems of the participating countries under the same cost, security, and processing time conditions, regardless of borders. SEPA includes all member states of the European Union, the United Kingdom, countries in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City.

Joining SEPA brings immediate and tangible benefits for citizens, the diaspora, companies, and the entire economy. According to calculations by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), while previously an international transfer could cost between 20 and 200 euros, it will now be processed under the same standards and fees as in the European Union — with just a few euros or even for free.
