VIDEO // Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES: Taul Dendrological Park – corner of natural, historical heritage, explored together with European Union's ambassador
In the north of Moldova, in a landscape dominated by gentle hills and ancient forests, lies one of the country’s most impressive sites of natural and cultural heritage – the Taul Dendrological Park.
Considered the largest dendrological park of Moldova, this site of exceptional botanical and historical value has been recently explored by Iwona Piórko, the European Union Ambassador to Moldova, who visited the park and its famous manor house, rediscovering one of the country’s most beautiful cultural and natural destinations.
A unique park in the Republic of Moldova
The Taul Dendrological Park covers an area of approximately 46 hectares and is home to over 150 species of trees and shrubs from different regions of the world. Among them, there are rare species brought from Asia, North America and the Caucasus region, turning the park into a true open-air natural museum.
The design of the park began at the start of the 20th century, around 1901, when the estate’s owner, wealthy industrialist and philanthropist Vladimir Pommer, ruled to create a European-inspired park in northern Bessarabia. For this ambitious project, Pommer appealed to the renowned architect and landscape designer Hippolyte Vladislav-Padalko, who planned the grounds in a romantic style with winding alleys, wide clearings, and spectacular natural vistas.
The park was laid out, so that every corner would offer visitors a different experience: from centuries-old trees and rare botanical collections to lakes, meadows and panoramic viewpoints revealing the natural beauty of the region.
Over time, dendrologists have identified numerous valuable species here, including rare ornamental trees, exotic conifers, and varieties of deciduous trees introduced specifically to create a diverse landscape. Some of these specimens are now over one hundred years old and are considered true natural monuments.
The Pommer Manor – a page of history
At the center of the park, stands one of the most interesting architectural monuments in northern Moldova – the Pommer Manor. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the manor served as the summer residence of the Pommer family, one of the region’s most influential landowning and entrepreneurial families.
The building impresses with its eclectic architectural style, combining classical and romantic elements typical of aristocratic residences in Central and Eastern Europe. Its location in the middle of the park was chosen to provide a panoramic view over the entire dendrological garden.
Over the decades, the manor has gone through complex historical periods. Following the political changes of the 20th century, the building served various administrative and cultural purposes; yet, it has remained one of the symbols of the region’s historical heritage.
Visit of the European Union Ambassador
The European Union Ambassador’s visit to Taul was dedicated to promoting the cultural and natural values of Moldova, as well as encouraging local tourism. “
This park is an extraordinary place where nature, history and culture meet in a harmonious way. It is impressive to discover such heritage of Moldova and places like Taul deserve to be known and appreciated by as many people as possible,” said Iwona Piórko during the visit.
The Ambassador emphasized that promoting cultural and natural heritage was an important element for the development of tourism and for strengthening local identity.
“Moldova has many beautiful and authentic places, and the Taul Dendrological Park is a perfect example. Initiatives that promote such destinations can contribute to the development of tourism and to the valorization of heritage,” added the European diplomat.
A tourist destination with potential
Today, the Taul Dendrological Park is considered one of the most important tourist attractions in the north of Moldova. Visitors can discover shady alleys, rare botanical collections, and landscapes that change spectacularly with each season.
In spring, the park is dominated by the colors of blooming trees; in summer it offers coolness and tranquility in the midst of nature; and in autumn it turns into a true symphony of colors.
Thanks to its size and botanical diversity, the park is also an important research site for specialists in dendrology and botany.
The authorities and international partners are working to bring such lesser-known places, with remarkable historical and natural value, to the public’s attention.
The Taul Dendrological Park and its manor thus remain not only a testament to the region’s aristocratic past, but also an open invitation to tourists who want to discover the authentic beauty of Moldova.
