The Republic of Moldova and the People's Republic of China are taking important steps toward decentralized cooperation, focusing on direct partnerships between local communities. Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to China Petru Frunze paid his first official visit to a Chinese province since taking office, choosing as destination the city of Yiwu in Zhejiang Province, a world-class commercial hub.

The visit marked a turning point in bilateral relations at the regional level, with the main achievement being the opening of negotiations to establish close administrative ties through twinning agreements.

During the official meeting with the vice mayor of Yiwu, Gong Shujuan, Ambassador Petru Frunze laid the foundations for long-term cooperation. The discussions resulted in the decision to initiate official procedures for signing a cooperation and twinning agreement between Yiwu and a locality in the Republic of Moldova.

The Moldovan diplomat emphasized his intention to expand this successful model. The Embassy’s objective is to identify more Chinese metropolises interested in establishing strategic partnerships with cities in the Republic of Moldova.

“These twinning arrangements will target key areas such as facilitating the exchange of goods and attracting Chinese capital into the local economy; student exchange programs and events promoting national traditions; and the implementation of modern solutions for managing local public services,” Petru Frunze noted.

The ambassador’s agenda included a visit to the renowned Yiwu Trade Center, a 5.5 million m² complex that hosts over 2 million manufacturers. Recognizing the enormous potential for Moldovan exports, Petru Frunze requested the establishment of direct contacts between the administration of this commercial giant and economic agents from the Republic of Moldova.

Such a connection would allow domestic products to gain unprecedented visibility on the Asian market, eliminating intermediaries and facilitating logistical partnerships.

Beyond the economic component, the visit also highlighted the importance of people-to-people relations. At the invitation of the Chinese sports authorities, the Moldovan ambassador took part in a cycling race dedicated to the diplomatic staff. The presence of the Moldovan official, who had the honor of presenting certificates to the winners, reconfirmed that sport remains a universal language capable of strengthening friendship between peoples.

“Sport represents a common objective, capable of bringing people together and strengthening friendly relations between countries,” Petru Frunze stressed, highlighting the atmosphere of openness and mutual respect encountered in Zhejiang Province.

The trip signals a new strategy in Moldova’s diplomacy in China, one much more tailored to the needs of local authorities and the private sector, turning geographical distance into a development opportunity through twinning arrangements and direct economic partnerships.
