Well-known Moldovan academician marks 70th birthday anniversary

Chisinau, 16 July /MOLDPRES/ - Historian, titular member of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM), honorary member of the Romanian Academy, laureate of the State Prize and of the Romanian Academy’s Prize Andrei Esanu marks his 70th birthday anniversary today.   

Esanu was born in the Sculeni village, western Ungheni district, on 16 July 1948. In 1971, he graduated from the History Faculty of Moldova’s State University (USM). Andrei Esanu worked as a teacher of history for almost one year. Afterwards, he was employed at ASM’s History Institute in 1972, where he worked as junior research associate, senior research associate, deputy director and acting director.      

In 1982, Esanu maintained a thesis of Doctor of Historical Sciences with the subject, School and Education in Moldova of the 15th Century – Early 18th Century. In 1992, he maintained – the one PhD in historical sciences, tackling the topic, Culture of Country of Moldova of the 15th-19th Centuries, Problems of History of Education, Book Culture and Social and Political Thought. Starting from 2006, he has been holding the title of professor researcher.  

In 1990-1994, Andrei Esanu worked as head of the History of Culture laboratory at USM and beginning with 1994 till present, he has been chief scientific researcher at the ASM History Institute.   

Esanu is author of more than 420 scientific works, including 33 monographs, collections of studies, editions of historical reports and documents. He participated in over 150 national and international scientific conferences.    

A congratulatory message, addressed to the scientist by the ASM Presidium reads, inter alia, that “academician Andrei Esanu is a famous figure of the Romanian historical science on both banks of the Prut river, who devoted himself to several directions of research: history of education, didactic literature and spread of literacy in Moldova in the 15th-18th centuries, history of printed books and manuscripts, medieval historiography of the social and political thought in the medieval Moldova, history of the churches and monasteries from the historical Moldova, works and literary activity of important personalities in the Moldovan medieval culture: Grigore Ureche, Nicolae Milescu Spataru, Dimitrie Cantemir, etc.     

Academician Andrei Esanu was awarded the honorary title Merited Man, State Prize, Labour Glory Order, Order of the Republic, Prize of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences, Titu Maiorescu Prize of the Romanian Academy, ASM’s Dimitrie Cantemir Medal, Order Pious Paisie Velicivoscki of the second degree, provided by Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova, and others.
