DOC // 1.82 billion lei for national roads in 2026: Road Fund Program published in Official Journal

The Road Fund Program for 2026, approved by the Government on Wednesday has been published in the Official Journal, thereby becoming a legally binding act. The document provides for the allocation of 1.82 billion lei for the maintenance, modernization, and repair of 5,993 km of national public roads.

According to the Program, the funds are mainly directed towards keeping national roads in good driving condition, preventing pavement degradation, and increasing the safety of all road users. The sections included in the plan were selected following an investigation of the road network, in order to ensure an efficient and well-founded distribution of resources.

Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea said that the decision directly concerns citizens’ safety and the responsible use of public money.

“It's a decision about what safety looks like for our people, about how fast an ambulance can arrive, about how safely a child can get to school, and about how correctly we spend every public leu. We will intervene rigorously wherever expenditures are not justified,” Bolea said.

Out of the total of 1.82 billion lei, 672.68 million lei are earmarked for summer and winter maintenance of national public roads, as well as current maintenance. The works include installing road signs, putting up safety barriers, building and repairing sidewalks, and arranging parking spaces. 423 million lei are allocated for the modernization of approximately 285 km of regional roads. Over 397 million lei will be directed towards the capital repair of 26 facilities, including roads and engineering structures.

In addition to the roadworks, the Program provides for the establishment and equipping of a testing laboratory within the National Road Administration, which will ensure quality control of construction materials and completed works. The laboratory will also have a research role and will develop technical standards for new road technologies.

Publication in the Official Journal marks the entry into force of the Program, which sets the financial and technical framework for managing the national road infrastructure in 2026.
