EU earmarks €64 million grant for both banks of Dniester

The government will sign today a non-reimbursable financing contract with the European Commission through which it will receive free support worth €64 million. Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced that a final agreement has been reached with the European Union regarding the aid package offered in the context of the energy crisis, announced at the beginning of this week.

The official emphasized that €30 million will be used to purchase gas and electricity for both banks of the Dniester.

"Accordingly, €20 million will be for the purchase of natural gas as humanitarian aid intended for the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, and €10 million for the purchase of electricity for the needs of the right bank of the Dniester," Recean said.

Additionally, the prime minister noted that €34 million will come as budgetary support.

"The European Union saves the Republic of Moldova once again. This means European solidarity. While Russia leaves people in cold and darkness, Europe comes with money and concrete, direct support to break free once and for all from this energy blackmail," Recean said.

Recean said that the European Union is providing a support package for the Republic of Moldova in the context of the energy crisis on the left bank of the Dniester. Later, Moldovagaz and Tiraspoltransgaz signed the loan contract of 3 million cubic meters of natural gas to support the functionality of the gas system on the left bank of the Dniester.

As of 1 January 2025, despite contractual commitments, the Russian concern Gazprom stopped gas deliveries to the Republic of Moldova, which were entirely directed to the Transnistrian region.
