Moldova to build up larger natural gas reserves: bill proposed by Ministry of Energy
The Republic of Moldova will build up larger reserves of natural gas. These reserves will increase by 6.5 million m³, reaching a total of 56.3 million m³ for the 2026–2027 cold season. The Ministry of Energy has completed the public consultation and approval process for a draft decision that provides for this measure.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the increase in security stocks is driven by the higher actual consumption recorded during the 2025–2026 winter. The new volume is to be formed by Energocom by October 1, 2026.
The entire strategic reserve of natural gas, equivalent to approximately 10 days of winter consumption, is currently stored in facilities in Romania and Ukraine, as well as in other states of the European Union and the Energy Community, since the Republic of Moldova does not have its own natural gas storage capacities.
The obligation to constitute security stocks is regulated by the national legal framework and monitored by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE), being part of the mechanism established after the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.
Security stocks are separate from commercial stocks and may be used solely in exceptional situations, by decision of the competent authorities. During the 2025–2026 cold season, commercial stocks were used almost entirely to cover peak consumption, without affecting the security reserves.
