From 2026, farmers to have access to new financing for agricultural technology modernization with Japan's help

Modernization of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment (MAME) project, implemented with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will continue with a new phase of financing, which will start in the first half of 2026 and will propose a financial product with reduced interest rates, extended repayment periods, and simplified access procedures. The funding will include agricultural equipment designed to reduce climate risks, especially for orchards.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA), negotiations between Chisinau authorities and Japanese partners are ongoing. During a working meeting, Minister Ludmila Catlabuga and JICA delegation, led by the agency's senior director, Takashi Hibino discussed concrete steps for launching the program.

'The partnership with Japan is a strategic one for the modernization of Moldovan agriculture. The expansion of MAME project will enable farmers to become more competitive and better prepared for climate challenges,' Catlabuga said.

Through the new financing, authorities aim to strengthen the agricultural sector and increase farmers' productivity, as well as attract young people to agriculture thanks to easier access to modern technology.

So far, hundreds of farmers have benefited from MAME, acquiring tractors, combines, seeders, harvesting and post-harvesting machinery, trailers, and crop protection equipment under advantageous conditions.

MAME project - Modernization of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment is one of the most important support programs for farmers in the Republic of Moldova. It was launched with JICA support and aims primarily to facilitate farmers' access to modern and efficient technology. The project offers financing mechanisms under preferential conditions (low interest rates, extended repayment periods, simplified procedures); the possibility of purchasing agricultural machinery and equipment in installments; access to modern machinery: tractors, combines, seeders, harrows, harvesting and post-harvesting machinery, trailers, and crop protection equipment.
