Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu announces mandate priorities: EU accession and smart agriculture

Moldova's integration into the European Union, rethinking approaches to agriculture, and developing the agri-food industry are the main short-term priorities of new Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Eugeniu Osmochescu. The official made the statements after taking the oath of office this morning.

According to the minister, agriculture is the field with the largest body of EU acquis that needs to be transposed into national legislation.

“Priority zero remains the same – EU integration. Around 33% of all European regulations and directives fall under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture. One third of what the state of the Republic of Moldova does is within the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture,” said Eugeniu Osmochescu.

The second direction announced by the minister is rethinking approaches in agriculture by promoting smart farming, based on science and adapted to the climatic conditions of the Republic of Moldova.

“We are living through years of drought and we need to rethink how we approach agriculture. This is about irrigation, smart agriculture, but also about a shared change in attitude, together with farmers and all agricultural producers,” said Eugeniu Osmochescu.

The minister also mentioned the need for a more efficient approach to the subsidy system so that public funds allocated to farmers generate the greatest possible impact for the sector and for the national economy. The third priority concerns the development of the agri-food industry, which Osmochescu considers an essential component of the Republic of Moldova’s economy.

“The development of the agri-food industry is an integral part of the Republic of Moldova and of our economy. It is one of the three components that ensure Moldova’s growth. In 2025, this was agriculture, together with the ICT sector and industrial production,” the minister said.

Eugeniu Osmochescu emphasized that the three directions – European integration, the transformation of agriculture, and the development of the agri-food industry – are priorities that must also be addressed in the short term.

The new Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry took the oath of office today alongside Claudiu Năsui, who assumed the portfolio at the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that the Government will support the reforms promoted by the two ministers as part of the objective of building a stronger economy and a state that works better for its citizens. The prime minister stressed that the Government’s approach is results-oriented and that public resources must be used so as to generate the greatest possible impact.

Osmochescu previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization.
