Liberalization of natural gas market: As of 1 April 2026, large non-household consumers to operate on free market

The natural gas market in the Republic of Moldova continues its liberalization process. As of 1 April 2026, large non-household consumers will operate on the free natural gas market, having the possibility to conclude supply contracts at negotiated prices or to purchase gas through the BRM EST Moldova trading platform.

According to data from the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE), in 2025 there were 189 large non-household consumers registered in Moldova, and 68 of them have already moved to the free market. Since the beginning of 2026, 109 contracts have been concluded on the BRM platform, with more than 8,200 MWh of natural gas traded at prices ranging between 710 and 970 lei/MWh (excluding transport and distribution tariffs).

At the same time, the market is becoming more competitive through the entry of important regional players. The state trader from Bulgaria, Bulgargaz North Ltd, is already active on the Moldovan market, and in January 2026 ANRE licensed the Romanian company ROMGAZ Trading Ltd, producer and developer of the Neptun Deep field in the Black Sea.

ANRE, together with the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Community Secretariat, will organize a new Gas Forum at the beginning of February to explain to economic agents the opportunities of market liberalization and to connect consumers with natural gas suppliers within a B2B component.

The liberalization of the natural gas market is a necessary measure for creating a competitive and transparent energy sector.
