Moldovan energy minister thanks partners from Romania, Ukraine, EU for vital support to Moldova’s power system

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has conveyed a message of gratitude and recognition to international partners, following the management of last week’s critical incident in the power system. According to the official, the unavailability of the Isaccea–Vulcanesti high-voltage overhead transmission line represented a major resilience test for the stability of power grids across the entire region.

The minister highlighted the decisive role of transmission system operators from neighboring and partner countries, who had intervened to support Moldova in a moment of crisis. The message of appreciation was addressed to the companies Transelectrica (Romania), Ukrenergo (Ukraine), SEPS (Slovakia), PSE (Poland) and MAVIR (Hungary).

Dorin Junghietu underlined that the immediate support and operational coordination provided by these operators proved that energy security in Europe had become a shared strategic responsibility, going beyond the scope of strictly national interests.

“What we witnessed last week was European solidarity in action — a clear signal that Moldova is not alone and that our partners are ready to act when stability is at risk,” the minister stressed.

According to the Moldovan authorities, this experience confirms the strategic importance of electrical interconnections, which are seen not only as infrastructure elements, but as essential instruments of security, resilience and national sovereignty.

The energy minister reaffirmed Moldova’s firm commitment to accelerating the process of integration into the European energy system and to strengthening cross-border capacities. The ultimate goal remains to actively contribute to the creation of a safer, more interconnected and more united European energy market, capable of responding swiftly to any technical or geopolitical challenges.

The Isaccea–Vulcanesti overhead transmission line was disconnected on the evening of March 23, following attacks on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine. Under these conditions, the authorities activated alternative power supply routes, including the four 110 kV interconnection lines between Romania and Moldova.
