Moldova increases capacity of export of electricity to EU

The capacity of export of electricity from the joint Moldova - Ukraine block to the European ENTSO-E network was increased from 550 MW to 650 MW starting from 1 May.

According to the Moldelectrica enterprise, this growth will allow increasing the quantity of electric energy to be exported to Romania and potentially other European countries, thus strengthening Moldova's position as a regional electricity supplier.

"After the increase of export capacity on the UAMD block profile, the cross-border transfer capacity (NTC) at the Moldova - Romania border, in the export direction, was expanded from 82 MW to 97 MW, providing even more space for the trade with electricity with EU member States," Moldelectrica noted.

Due to the decrease in domestic consumption driven by warmer weather and increased production from renewable sources - especially from solar and hydroelectric plants – Moldova’s export volumes traditionally grow during the spring season.

Therefore, this development will allow renewable energy producers from Moldova, who are active on the free market, to more easily access competitive EU markets, thereby effectively capitalizing on the country's green resources.
