Chisinau International Airport expands by 30 per cent using its own resources - more comfort, increased traffic; Moldovan deputy PM says investment estimated at 140-145 million euros

The Chisinau International Airport will be expanded by about 5,000 square meters, representing a 30-per cent increase in the area of the present terminal. The total investment is estimated at 140–145 million euros, funded by the airport's revenues, without external loans. Deputy Prime Minister, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea made statements to this effect at a TV talk show on December 15 evening.

"We ruled to expand the present terminal, in order to meet passengers' needs, considering the rapid growth in traffic – over 5 million passengers this year and the trend to reach 6 million soon," Bolea said.

The project includes upgrading infrastructure, adding boarding gates (from 7 to 13), and creating more comfortable spaces for passengers, ensuring more efficient services and a better flow of travelers.

Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea also highlighted the need to create better conditions for Ukrainian citizens using the Chisinau Airport, in the context of the war in Ukraine. Approximately half of the passengers are foreign citizens, mostly Ukrainians.

"Those coming through the Chisinau Airport to travel to Odessa, for instance, have to cover distances of 500–700 meters to the nearest station in rain or sun, without access to toilets or shelter. We will discuss with the airport management to find quick solutions, such as building a shelter or a hangar, in order to ensure a minimum of comfort," Bolea noted.

The official emphasized that the state would continue to develop the airport and ensure optimal transport conditions, even if, after the reopening of Ukrainian airports, the number of passengers and revenues will decrease.
