China intends to build, through assistance, four new photovoltaic plants in Moldova and contribute to the development of energy storage capacity. China’s ambassador to Moldova Zhihua Dong has made statements to this effect in an exclusive interview with MOLDPRES.

According to the diplomat, in July 2026, a Chinese preparatory technical study mission visited Moldova and held discussions with governmental institutions on the assistance projects. The ambassador said that the Chinese side was prepared to cooperate with the Moldovan authorities to implement them as quickly as possible.

“In view of Moldova’s energy deficit, the Chinese side plans to build, through assistance, four new photovoltaic plants and add energy storage capacity. In July this year, a Chinese preparatory technical study mission visited Moldova for in-depth discussions with Moldovan governmental institutions about the respective assistance projects. We are willing to work together with the Moldovan side, so that these projects can be implemented as soon as possible,” Zhihua Dong said.

The ambassador noted that the photovoltaic park in Criuleni district, built with China’s assistance, had been operating for more years and continued to benefit the local population.

Energy cooperation is part of a broader agenda that China intends to develop with Moldova. Zhihua Dong mentioned green energy, smart transportation, agricultural products’ processing and infrastructure as areas offering opportunities to expand cooperation in equipment, technology and investment.

“In the context of the advancement of Moldova’s European integration, we wish to develop, together with the Moldovan side, cooperation in equipment, technology and investment in such areas as green energy, smart transportation, agricultural product processing and infrastructure,” the ambassador said.

Zhihua Dong also highlighted the use in Moldova of Chinese new-energy vehicles and agricultural machinery manufactured in China. She also mentioned the activity of Huawei, which has been present on the Moldovan market for more than ten years, in developing telecommunications infrastructure and digital solutions.

Another goal of Moldovan-Chinese cooperation is to expand access for Moldovan products to the Chinese market. According to the ambassador, grape-seed flour and sunflower-seed flour from Moldova are already exported to China, while progress has been made toward gaining market access for honey, cherries and grape seeds.

The two countries are preparing to convene a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Trade Cooperation, which, according to Zhihua Dong, has not met for ten years. During the meeting, the sides are expected to discuss, among other issues, the export of Moldovan agricultural products to China, the expansion of investment and the development of economic cooperation.

“On this occasion, the sides will make efforts to achieve concrete results concerning the export to China of the aforementioned agricultural products, the expansion of investment and cooperation in Moldova, as well as other issues,” the diplomat said.

China is also supporting Moldova’s participation, for the first time, in the China International Import Expo (CIIE). The ambassador believes that participation in the event will provide Moldovan producers with a platform to promote wines, agricultural products and other goods on the Chinese market.

“This will serve as an important showcase for quality wines, agricultural products and other distinctive Moldovan goods, and the Chinese side has prepared a string of facilities for Moldova’s participation,” Zhihua Dong said.

According to the ambassador, the Chinese side is also promoting the opening of a direct freight transportation route between Moldova and China, with the aim of reducing transportation costs for Moldovan products meant for the Chinese market.

Zhihua Dong invited Moldovan companies to participate in the main economic fairs and exhibitions organized in China, including the China International Import Expo, the Canton Fair, the China International Fair for Trade in Services and the China International Fair for Investment and Trade.

The ambassador said that the Embassy of China was prepared to facilitate contacts between the business communities of the two countries and support Moldovan companies interested in entering the Chinese market or developing partnerships with Chinese firms.

In the interview with MOLDPRES, Zhihua Dong also discussed the Moldovan-Chinese relations in the areas of culture, tourism and education, as well as promoting Moldova as a tourist destination for Chinese citizens.
