Military sappers neutralized 21 explosive devices remaining from World War II
National Army sapper teams carried out 14 demining missions across the country in June, during which 21 explosive devices remaining from World War II were detected and neutralized.
The missions were conducted in the municipality of Chisinau and in the districts of Ungheni, Stefan Voda, Causeni, Leova, Cimislia, Ialoveni, Anenii Noi, and Cahul, based on requests received from local public authorities and competent bodies.
“In the locality of Hristoforovca, Ungheni district, one mission was carried out by a demining team from the ‘Codru’ Engineering Battalion, led by Major Ion Golovei. The sappers identified and destroyed seven mortar shells, 82 mm caliber. The munitions were discovered in the garden of a household,” the Ministry of Defense announced.
Since the beginning of this year, sapper teams have carried out 66 demining missions, during which 182 explosive devices were detected and neutralized.
From 1992 to the present, 25 people have died and another 29 have been injured as a result of explosions of various munitions. Of the total number of victims, eight children have died and another six have been injured. The most recent fatal incident involving the handling of an explosive device occurred yesterday in the village of Gura Galbenei, Cimislia district.
The Ministry of Defense reminds citizens that unexploded munitions pose a major danger to life and health, even if they have been in the ground for decades. In case of discovering suspicious objects, people are urged not to touch them, not to attempt to move or dismantle them, and to immediately notify the competent authorities by calling the emergency service 112.
