Energy Minister in Montreal: Energy efficiency - best investment to reduce citizens’ bills
For the Republic of Moldova, energy efficiency is the first fuel. It is the fastest, most affordable and at the same time the most effective investment we can make to strengthen energy security and reduce citizens’ bills. Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu made the statement at the 11th edition of the Global Annual Conference on Energy Efficiency, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Montreal, one of the most important international forums dedicated to energy efficiency policies.
In his address during the ministerial meeting, Dorin Junghietu emphasized that, for Moldova, energy efficiency has long gone beyond the status of an environmental objective and has become a strategic tool for strengthening energy security and reducing citizens’ vulnerability.
“Every renovated building, every efficient household appliance and every kilowatt-hour saved means less energy dependence and a more competitive economy,” said Dorin Junghietu.
Dorin Junghietu listed the major investments and projects implemented in recent years in the field of energy efficiency, including through the Energy Efficiency Fund in the Residential sector, the EcoVoucher program aimed at replacing old household appliances with energy-efficient equipment, as well as the Green Home program, which provides grants for insulating single-family homes, installing modern heating systems, photovoltaic panels and storage batteries.
At the same time, the minister reiterated that the Republic of Moldova is implementing, together with the European Union, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, investments of over 300 million euros for the energy renovation of schools, hospitals, universities and other public institutions.
During the panel dedicated to energy affordability policies for households, the Minister of Energy spoke about our country’s experience in managing the energy crisis and the measures implemented to protect the population.
“The energy crisis has shown us that energy affordability and energy security are inseparable. Support for vulnerable consumers must be part of energy policy, not just social policy. At the same time, compensations are short-term solutions. The long-term solution is energy efficiency, which reduces households’ vulnerability and gives them greater independence,” stated Dorin Junghietu.
On the margins of the conference, Minister Dorin Junghietu held bilateral meetings with Quebec’s Minister of the Environment, Pascale Dery, as well as with the Deputy Mayor of Montreal, Effie Giannou. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the field of energy transition and energy efficiency, as well as on exchanging best practices on sustainable development.
The Global Annual Conference on Energy Efficiency, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), is one of the main international events dedicated to energy efficiency policies.
