European experts mission to review Moldova's progress in fighting corruption
The Ministry of Justice hosted the first meeting with TAIEX peer review evaluation mission, consisting of European Union experts, who are analyzing Moldova's progress in combating high-level corruption, organized crime and money laundering.
Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the experts will analyze how national authorities have handled specific cases, from the prosecution phase to sentencing.
“With the European Council's decision to open negotiations with Moldova, we are even more determined to continue efforts to harmonize national legislation with European standards and to strengthen national institutions' capacities in fulfilling their mandates to fight high-level corruption, organized crime and money laundering according to best practices. This evaluation exercise will allow us to assess whether the level of law enforcement and current institutional mechanisms meet European Union requirements,” Mihailov said.
Expert team leader Giovanni Pasqua said that there will be intense days of analysis, information exchange and formulating useful recommendations for Moldovan authorities.
Attending the event were representatives of the Superior Council of Magistracy, the General Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Anti-Corruption Center and the Service for the Prevention and Combating of Money Laundering.
The mission, taking place on 17-21 March is organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, and the final conclusions will be presented to Moldovan authorities, the European Commission and EU member states.
