Water quality legislation to be aligned with European standards
Moldovan citizens will benefit from high quality drinking water, according to the latest public health standards. A bill to amend the legal framework on drinking water quality was supported by 57 MPs.
The legislative initiative, set up by the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) aims to update the parameters subject to verification, establish a national system for assessing contamination risks, and modernize water treatment infrastructure.
The document also sets out clear mechanisms for granting exemptions to water suppliers, setting maximum allowable limits for potentially hazardous substances.
According to the new regulations, local public authorities will be required to identify citizens with limited access to water and facilitate their connection to public networks, as well as inform the population about the quality of the water.
According to 2023 data, about 63% of localities have access to drinking water from public networks, 13% more than in 2018.
