Calls, Internet without extra charges in European Union; Moldova joins EU's Roam Like at Home Zone as of 2026

Citizens of Moldova starting from 1 January 2026 will be able to use mobile phone services in European Union member states without additional roaming costs, just like at home, reports MOLDPRES. The decision today was adopted by the Council of the European Union, the institution that brings together the governments of the EU member states.

The decision was welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov:

“Today as well, good news from Brussels! The Council adopted the decision for  Moldova to become part of the European Union's Roam Like at Home zone, starting from January 1, 2026. Our country's citizens who travel to the EU, as well as European citizens visiting Moldova will be able to make calls, send messages, and access mobile Internet without extra charges and with the same quality as in their home country.”

According to the EU Council's announcement, the decision aims to support the economic and digital integration of Moldova into the EU's domestic market, an objective provided for in the 2016 Association Agreement. The measure extends the present mobile roaming benefits in the EU to Moldova too, as it has been   recently done for Ukraine.

A similar decision was adopted for Ukraine on July 14, and it will also come into effect starting January 1, 2026. Both Ukraine and Moldova hold status of candidate for accession to the European Union.

At present, users in Moldova already benefit from reduced roaming rates, following an agreement signed in 2024 between Moldovan authorities and the EU. Under the today's decision, these benefits will be consolidated and extended, and as of 2026, roaming between Moldova and the EU will be fully eliminated.

The agreement also guarantees that users will have access to the same speed and quality of the mobile network, and calls to emergency services will be free of charge.

This measure is part of the EU's commitment to progressively integrate Moldova into European structures and standards, providing concrete benefits to Moldovan citizens and businesses.
