Moldova denounces another agreement signed within Commonwealth of Independent States: parliament votes withdrawal from treaty on books and printing
Moldova has denounced the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Book Publishing, Distribution, and Printing, concluded within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The parliament today approved a draft decision to this effect, with 56 votes for.
The initiative to denounce the agreement was put forward by the Culture Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which say that the agreement no longer corresponds to the national interests of Moldova and to the development needs of the cultural and publishing sector.
According to the explanatory note to the draft, Moldova is directing its efforts toward European platforms that offer more effective tools for supporting culture, education, research, creative industries and international cultural exchanges, such as Horizon Europe and Creative Europe.
The agreement proposed for denunciation was signed by 12 former Soviet states in 1995.
The denunciation of the agreement is part of a broader process of reviewing treaties concluded within the CIS, with a view to aligning the legislative and economic framework of Moldova with European norms and standards.
In the last two years, Moldova has launched an extensive process to examine the relevance and applicability of treaties concluded under the CIS. According to the latest information presented by the authorities, out of 283 CIS agreements, 71 have already been denounced and approximately 60 are currently under review.
