Prime Minister invites Turkish companies to invest in Moldova

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that relations between the Republic of Moldova and Turkey are very strong and are developing both economically and culturally as well as politically. The official emphasized that the two countries could set as an objective the increase of bilateral trade volume to 2 billion dollars in the coming years, compared to the current level of 1 billion dollars. In this context, Vasile Tofan invited companies from Turkey to invest in our country.

During a private visit to Istanbul, Vasile Tofan gave an interview to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, in which he assessed relations between Turkey and Moldova, economic cooperation, investments in the energy sector, and the effects of the war between Russia and Ukraine on the region.

The official described the current state of relations between Turkey and Moldova as “excellent.”

Tofan stated that the trade volume between Turkey and Moldova has reached approximately 1 billion dollars, adding that this represents about 5% of Moldova’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Speaking about his objectives for trade volume, Tofan said that the two countries should aim to double bilateral trade.

“I come from the business world. I like very ambitious goals, so we should aim at least to double our mutual trade and reach 2 billion dollars,” he said.

Tofan specified that an annual increase of around 20%–25% would be sufficient to reach this target.

“If we increase our mutual trade volume by about 24%, we can double this volume within two years,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that Turkish firms show strong interest in investing in Moldova. “There are approximately 1,200 Turkish companies investing in Moldova,” Tofan said. According to the Prime Minister, Turkish companies are active in numerous sectors, including road construction, energy, the hotel industry, and medical tourism.

At the same time, Vasile Tofan pointed out that there is further growth potential and invited companies from Turkey to explore investment opportunities in our country.

“We would like to see more investments from Turkey in Moldova. We are moving fast and I believe that Moldova can be a window to the European Union, an export platform for companies coming from Turkey,” he added.

Tofan said that Turkish industry could produce in Moldova and then expand into the European Union market.

“We want to bring more of these industries to Moldova, so that these sectors can use Moldova as a platform for exports to the European Union, benefiting from the free trade agreement with the European Union and with other partners,” he said.

Referring to tourism, Vasile Tofan said that about 400,000 people from Moldova choose Turkey as a holiday destination, and invited Turkish tourists to discover the beauty of Moldova.
