Moldovan president on visit to Holy See

President Maia Sandu today was received in an audience by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. During the meeting, the head of referred to the importance of restoring peace on the European continent, as well as the Christian values that have preserved the unity and dignity of Moldova’s people in the face of historical challenges. "Even in difficult times, people have kept holy places as best they could and kept the faith alive," the president emphasized.

Maia Sandu also highlighted the humanity proved by the citizens of Moldova in the context of the war at the border, noting that the solidarity and compassion of Moldovan citizens were now recognized worldwide. "This is how we became known as a small country with a big heart," the head of state stressed.

The president thanked the Supreme Pontiff for the important moral support for the European path of Moldova. "His Holiness assured me that Moldova is seen, that Moldova is heard," Maia Sandu said.

During the visit to the Holy See, the Moldovan president also had a meeting with  Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. The discussions focused on Moldova’s efforts to promote peace, stability and regional security.
