Memorandum for inclusion of Cucuteni–Trypillia culture on UNESCO list, signed in Chisinau

The Memorandum of Understanding regarding the joint nomination of the transnational property, Precucuteni–Ariusd–Cucuteni–Trypillia, for the putting down in the UNESCO World Heritage List was signed in Chisinau today. The document was signed in the presence of culture ministers from Moldova and Romania, as well as the representative of the culture minister of Ukraine.

The agreement paves the way for international recognition and protection of one of the largest archaeological complexes in Southeast Europe, over six millennia old.

The signing ceremony took place at an international conference titled, The Exceptional Universal Value of the Precucuteni–Ariusd–Cucuteni–Trypillia Cultural Complex, which brings together experts from the three countries and emphasizes the potential of this heritage to be included on the UNESCO list. The event is hosted by the National Museum of History of Moldova on September 18–19.

The Cucuteni–Trypillia culture, one of the most important prehistoric civilizations in Europe, existed between approximately 5,400 and 2,700 BC, on the current territories of Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. The culture is notable for its large settlements, pottery decorated with unique geometric motifs, advanced agricultural practices and complex social structures, being considered one of the most evolved Neolithic societies in Europe.
