New measures for ensuring drinking water quality approved by government
Materials and substances that come into direct contact with drinking water will be tested under a new Regulation approved by the Government. Until now, these were not regulated in terms of health, which could affect drinking water quality.
To protect public health and guarantee high quality, the Regulation sets out sanitary standards for all materials and substances in direct contact with water, such as: plastics, paper and cardboard, ceramics and glass, wood and rubber, wax and silicone, metals and alloys.
Additionally, the National Public Health Agency (ANSP) will check the compliance of materials used by economic operators through regular inspections. In this regard, ANSP laboratories are to be equipped with modern equipment and technologies for water quality testing.
The implementation of these actions will contribute to reducing water contamination risks, decreasing the number of illnesses associated with non-compliant water consumption, and enhancing the quality of tap water. Furthermore, the Regulation will facilitate equitable access to clean and safe water, especially for rural communities.
