Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe encourages Moldovan authorities to continue reforms underway
Chisinau, 23 July /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Maia Sandu, has had a meeting with corapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for Moldova, Maryvonne Blondin and Egidijus Vareikis, as well as Sylvie Affholder, secretary of the Monitoring Committee, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
During the meeting, the interlocutors have exchanged views on political crisis in Moldova and its consequences, but also on the steps to be taken. Also, there have been addressed the issues related to justice reform, prosecutor reform, combatting corruption in all areas, ensuring the independence of banking sector and mass media, also supported by Council of Europe (CoE) projects.
The PM has expressed gratitude to the Council of Europe for its involvement and interest with which the organisation follows the developments in Moldova through its expertise as an indispensable tool in the ongoing efforts to advance internal reforms. "The implementation of CoE expertise is seen as a necessary complement to the actions of Moldovan actors aimed at consolidating democracy, the rule of law and human rights at national level. We appreciate the support recently given to Moldova by the CoE structures, which have reconfirmed the constant and solid partnership," said PM Maia Sandu.
There were discussed some other themes at the meeting and namely related to Moldovan economy, but also the development of business environment, which is a challenge for existing Government. According to PM, the citizens, especially from low – income rural areas, need support, and implementation of certain projects in this respect is a primary one.
The PACE corapporteurs have encouraged the authorities to pursue the reforms which they have initiated and hope for an improvement in the situation in the field of democracy and the rule of law. "We appreciate the intention of new Government to take risks and liabilities. We shall ensure that together we shall continue the activities planned by mutual agreement so as to achieve the objective of strengthening cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the CoE in various fields", specified corapporteurs of PACE for Moldova, Egidijus Vareikis.
