Moldovan president discusses, leadership of NATO Parliamentary Assembly discuss security of Moldova
President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Marcos Perestrello and the Assembly’s Secretary General, Benedetta Berti, on a visit to Chisinau. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly brings together parliamentarians from the Alliance’s 32 member states and serves as a link between NATO and national parliaments. The parliament of Moldova has associate member status.
The discussion focused on the threats triggered by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which directly affects the security of Moldova. In September, the country’s airspace was violated more than 20 times and nine times in the past seven days. More Russian drones and missiles exploded on the territory of Moldova.
The Moldovan head of state stressed that protecting citizens was the state’s primary obligation. Therefore, Moldova will continue investing in security and defense and strengthening its institutions and resilience. The modernization of the National Army is advancing thanks to increased defense spending and the support of the European Union, NATO, and partner states.
Maia Sandu thanked the partner states for their support for Moldova and Ukraine, emphasizing that support for Ukraine is also support for Moldova.
The president reiterated that Moldova is a security partner for Ukraine and NATO’s eastern flank, and that, in order to remain a stable and democratic state and a trusted security provider, Moldova needs the anchor of European Union accession.
Moldova has been a NATO partner since 1994 through the Partnership for Peace programme. Cooperation respects the neutrality enshrined in the Constitution and aims to strengthen the country’s own defense capabilities.
