PM: Increasingly frequent drone incidents show that Moldova’s security no longer abstract issue
The increasingly frequent drone incidents caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine show that the security of the Republic of Moldova is no longer an abstract issue. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made the statement after a meeting in Brussels with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
The Prime Minister noted that the discussions with Kaja Kallas addressed current security risks and ways in which the Republic of Moldova can strengthen its ability to protect itself.
“The Republic of Moldova is a neutral state. But neutrality does not mean that we should be left defenseless,” Vasile Tofan emphasized.
According to the Prime Minister, the Republic of Moldova will strengthen its cooperation with the European Union through the Security and Defence Partnership, the European Peace Facility, and the EU Mission in Moldova.
“With more expertise, equipment, and response capacity,” the head of government said.
Vasile Tofan noted that although the Republic of Moldova is a small country, the support of its European partners contributes to strengthening its security.
“We are a small country, but with strong partners we can be much safer,” the Prime Minister said, thanking the European Union for its support.
The statements were made amid an intensification of drone incidents affecting the airspace of the Republic of Moldova against the backdrop of the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The latest incident occurred just yesterday, when a projectile fell near Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe border crossing. The object ricocheted and struck a scheduled bus that was stationary near the barrier. As a result of the incident, a Border Police officer sustained minor injuries.
