Over 100,000 tastings at National Wine Day in Moldova: which wines were most popular

Wine is an ambassador for Moldova around the world and this year’s edition of the National Wine Day once again demonstrated that the wine sector is growing. Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu has made statements to this effect at the “La 360 de grade” (At 360 Degrees) programme on Radio Moldova.

The minister emphasized that interest in Moldovan wines was growing, while the participation of producers and visitors in this year’s event confirms the development of the sector.

“We are number one in the world in terms of vineyard density. This year, 114 wineries participated, which shows that the sector is growing. We welcomed visitors from more than 70 countries. The number of tastings increased to 116,880 over these two days. In terms of tastings, white, sparkling and red wines ranked first, followed by divins,” the minister said.

Eugeniu Osmochescu also emphasized that Moldova had strengthened its wine-related image by setting a Guinness World Record during the event. According to the minister, participants complied with the strict requirements established for the record’s verification, including those concerning the shirts used to form the image.

“We also set a Guinness record—the largest human representation of a grapevine. The strict requirements established by Guinness representatives were followed, including those concerning the shirts used. The maximum price of a shirt, depending on its color, was 163 lei, and they were purchased in accordance with the procurement plans. The grapevine is the image of our state; it is the image of Moldova. In this case, wine is our ambassador,” the minister said.

A total of 493 people formed the world’s largest human representation of a grapevine on Chisinau’s Great National Assembly Square. At least 250 participants were required for the record to be verified. The record was officially confirmed on site by Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel.

This year’s National Wine Day took place on October 3–4, as part of its 25th edition and brought together producers, consumers and visitors from Moldova and abroad.
