Restoration of Jewish cemetery from Moldovan capital starts
Chisinau, 29 January /MOLDPRES/ - The authorities have started the restoration of the Jewish cemetery from Chisinau – a national monument of history and art.
The plan on reconstruction today was consulted at a fact-collecting visit by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu with representatives of the Jewish Community from Moldova, as well as with Chairman of the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad Paul Packer and Vice President of the Israeli Knesset, deputy head of the Israel-Moldova parliamentary friendship group Tali Ploskov, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
It is worth mentioning that the cemetery has been recently transferred from the management of the Chisinau municipal council to the one of the Education, Culture and Research Ministry.
The Jewish cemetery, with an area of over 12 hectares and more than 40,000 graves, has been functioning since 1887. It is one of the oldest cemeteries from Chisinau, being included into the list of the national category monuments of history and art. A part of the cemetery was destroyed during the World War II. In the cemetery, there are more old graves and monuments of more than a century, as well a funeral synagogue, unique in Moldova, which does not need to be repaired. Burials take place at the cemetery at present too.
