VIDEO // Road transport fares temporarily adjusted by government decision in Moldova

The government today approved, at an extraordinary meeting, an amendment to the methodology for calculating fares for road passenger transport. According to Deputy Prime Minister, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea, it is about measures aimed at maintaining routes and protecting citizens, in the context of pressures in the sector and concerns about the possible suspension of certain routes.

The official said that the intervention by the authorities came in response to the situation created in recent days, marked by requests from transport operators and risks of interruptions of services for the population.

“In recent days, we have seen concerns in society, as well as public pressure from transport operators, including statements about a possible suspension of routes. Under these conditions, the government is introducing a string of measures to protect people, in order to ensure that transport does not stop, that localities do not remain isolated and that each citizen can safely reach work, school or home,” said Vladimir Bolea.

According to the official, the approved amendments introduce a temporary and controlled fare adjustment mechanism, which allows for rapid adaptation to market developments without creating administrative bottlenecks. At the same time, the regulatory framework stays transparent and predictable, being managed by the National Road Transport Agency.

The deputy prime minister emphasized that the measures were time-limited in nature and would be applied only until the transport market stabilizes.

“We will introduce a temporary and controlled fare adjustment mechanism; we will allow rapid adaptation to market realities; we will maintain a transparent and predictable framework and we will ensure that these adjustments are strictly time-limited and will be withdrawn immediately once the market stabilizes,” Bolea specified.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu estimated that the decision had been prepared over the past two weeks and was primarily aimed at maintaining the functionality of road transport networks, preventing the isolation of settlements and ensuring continuity of services for citizens.
