Moldovan government holds extraordinary meeting to introduce new measures on emergency state period

The government today convened at an extraordinary meeting, in order to introduce new measures in the context of the state of emergency in the energy sector and to approve amendments to the Methodology for calculating tariffs for road passenger transport. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said that the authorities would intervene with prompt actions to manage the situation in the interest of citizens and economic agents.

“The government must intervene whenever necessary, in order to minimize the major impact caused by the interruption of the Isaccea–Vulcanesti line following the attack by the Russian Federation, as well as to address other problems, especially the steep increase in fuel prices. We are doing this, first and foremost, in order to protect citizens and economic agents. Through major efforts, we have managed to avoid power cuts, at least for now. But we cannot guarantee this going forward. We will continue to inform local authorities and citizens, as the situation is updated. We are in a state of emergency in the energy sector, and that means daily work, swift decisions and constant presence. I ask that we be prepared. On this period, there is a high likelihood that we will have to convene practically every day,” said Alexandru Munteanu.

At the same time, the PM warned that the state of emergency “is not a pretext to bypass the law or to adopt reckless or unjustified decisions.”

“We are keeping these aspects under control. We continue to act strictly within the limits of the law and in the interest of the people. We have all promised and I personally, that we will ensure maximum transparency and accountability and we will do just that,” concluded Alexandru Munteanu.

The prime minister urged citizens to use energy resources rationally.

The parliament of Moldova has established a nationwide state of emergency for a period of 60 days, starting from March 25, 2026, after the main power line supplying Moldova – the Vulcanesti–Isaccea line – had been disconnected following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure.
