Romania’s support for Moldova highlighted in Parliament

Speaker Igor Grosu emphasized the constant support offered by Romania during difficult times for our country. The statements were made at the opening of today’s parliamentary sitting, on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania.

“Romania has stood by us and continues to stand by us in the most difficult moments. The support provided during the pandemic, in the context of the war at our border, the energy crises, and for the European path of the Republic of Moldova has been essential. The Romanian authorities have also intervened in recent emergency situations, including in the case of the pollution of the Dniester River,” the Speaker stated.

The leader of the Socialist Party faction, Igor Dodon, also pointed out that Romania is Moldova’s main commercial and strategic partner and expressed gratitude for the support provided over time. However, he cautioned the elected officials that the Republic of Moldova remains an independent state and called for unionist ideas not to be promoted.

The Union of Bessarabia with Romania took place on March 27, 1918, when Sfatul Țării (Council of the Country) voted in favor of uniting this province with the Kingdom of Romania. This vote was a major historical moment in the process of forming Greater Romania, a state which, in 1918, brought together several historical provinces inhabited by Romanians.
