Departed historian, political figure of Moldova commemorated at 90th birthday anniversary

Chisinau, 19 July /MOLDPRES/ - The National Library of Moldova (BNRM), in partnership with the Alexandru Mosanu Association of Historians, today organized a roundtable titled, Historian, professor and political figure Alexandru Mosanu, with exhibition of books, dedicated to the 90th birthday anniversary of the university professor, PhD in historical sciences, the first speaker of Moldova’s parliament, the first head of Moldova’s Association of Historians, which presently bears his name, honorary member of the Romanian Academy Alexandru Mosanu.     

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the aforementioned Association, Anatol Petrencu, said that professor Alexandru Mosanu had been a complex personality, a good researcher of the past, an excellent university professor, who guided young researchers in the history field. ‘’Professor Alexandru Mosanu was the parliament speaker who essentially contributed to the proclamation of Moldova’s Independence, to the declaring of Tricolour as state flag and to the organization of the third National Assembly,’’ Petrencu said.   

Alexandru Mosanu was born in the Braniste commune, Balti county, on 19 July 1932. He studied at the History Faculty of the Moldovan State University (USM). During 1957-1976, he worked at the History Institute of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM). Starting from 1976, Mosanu worked at USM History Faculty. Simultaneously, he carried out a fruitful political activity, fit in the coordinates of the national liberation movement. Mosanu was one of the founders of the People’s Front and following the elections from 1990, - president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (parliament) of Moldova, an office held till 1993.     

Alexandru Mosanu was lawmaker starting from 1990 till 2001 and on 3 September 1990, he became parliament speaker. Mosanu had a decisive contribution to the elaboration of legislative acts on the flag of Moldova and the national anthem „Deșteaptă-te, române” (Wake Up, Romanian), the first anthem of Moldova. In 1993, he resigned from parliament and became president of the Congress of Intellectuals from Moldova, a capacity from which he was elected as MP. Mosanu was deputy president of the Party of Democratic Forces (PFD) and after the merger of this formation with the Social Liberal Party (PSL), he held the position of honorary president of this party (till 2005).  

Alexandru Mosanu was awarded the National Order Star of Romania in rank of Grand Officer (2014) and the Prize of the National Romanian Institute for the promotion of the values of the Romanian national culture.  

He died on 7 December 2017.
