EU mobilized over 1.2 billion euros to support Moldova
Chisinau, July 27. /MOLDPRES/- The European Union has mobilized from October 2021 until now over 1.2 billion euros to support the authorities and citizens of the Republic of Moldova to overcome the energy crisis and the economic and security challenges. The figures were presented today by MEP Siegfried Mureșan.
The money was allocated as non-refundable funds and loans on favorable terms, for the most important needs of the Republic of Moldova and its citizens, such as macro-financial stabilization of the country, support measures for people affected by the increase in energy prices, measures to increase safety in the context of the security threats generated by the war, and investments in the modernization of the country, infrastructure and the transition to a green economy, the MEP said.
According to the official, despite all the challenges, Moldova has made in the last two years impressive progress in the implementation of reforms necessary for European integration, such as the modernization of justice, public administration, the fight against corruption and the implementation of measures to guarantee human rights.
The MEP also added that in the last year, the European institutions made it a priority to support the Republic of Moldova. "Even the EU states that a few years ago were more reluctant in this regard have now understood the important role that the Republic of Moldova has for the stability and security of the entire European Union," said Mureșan.
Under these conditions, the official said that in 2024, support for our country must be continued and accelerated. "The Republic of Moldova has demonstrated that it deserves a clear perspective regarding the start of accession negotiations to the European Union. That's why we, the European Parliament, have requested on several occasions to start accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova by 2024, after the fulfillment of the nine reform recommendations sent by the European Commission", said Mureșan.
The Republic of Moldova submitted application for accession to the European Union on March 3, 2022.
