European Commissioner for Enlargement says Moldova achieved more in three years than in last three decades

Moldova has accelerated its reform process at an unprecedented pace, comparable to a progress "ten times faster" than in the last three decades. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos today made statements to this effect during a press conference held jointly with Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov.

The European official praised the Moldovan authorities’ determination and emphasized that the rapid pace of reforms was crucial for European integration and the country's economic success.

"In the last three years, you have achieved more than in the last 30. You have pressed the pedal of reforms ten times faster, which are directly linked to the growth plan and EU membership," said Kos.

According to the official, the next stage involves finalizing technical negotiations regarding accession and the realistic goal is for Moldova to become a member state by the end of 2028.

"We believe this is possible, and we fully support you in this ambition, but for this, a capable government and parliament are needed to continue this work," added Marta Kos.

The Commissioner also highlighted the already visible benefits for citizens: the improvement of the business environment, trade’s liberalization, Moldova's integration into the Single European Payment Area (SEPA) and the upcoming removal of roaming charges between Moldova and EU states.

"There will no longer be any difference between a call from Chisinau to Brussels and vice versa. The tariff will be the same," emphasized the official.

Another important point mentioned by the Commissioner is the use of European funds. Almost 300 million of the growth package, worth 1.9 billion euros, has already been allocated. The money is meant for infrastructure, supporting companies and improving the well-being of citizens in all districts of the country.

"European money does not come without conditions. It must be spent transparently, monitored and audited, because it belongs to the European taxpayers. Each citizen of Moldova must know how this money is invested: if roads are getting better, water cleaner, services more accessible," opined Kos.

The European Commissioner also conveyed a direct message to the citizens, in the context of the elections scheduled for the end of September.

"The future of your country is in your hands. Moldova can only succeed, if all Moldovans can see positive changes and have confidence in state institutions," concluded Marta Kos.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos pays an official visit Moldova on September 3–5, 2025. During the visit, she will hold discussions with government representatives on reforms and the European path, meet with investors and entrepreneurs on the future of the economy, talk with journalists, influencers, and content creators and visit cultural and religious heritage sites.

This is Marta Kos's third visit to the country. Last time, the official was in Moldova on May 8–12, when she visited more localities in the north and south of the country.
